San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie is Anti-Black.
On Tuesday, April 15th, representatives from the Black Employees Alliance (BEA) and the Coalition Against Anti-Blackness attempted to revisit the Mayor’s Office at San Francisco City Hall. We returned to follow up on a meeting request submitted weeks ago—one that has gone completely unanswered by Mayor Daniel Lurie and his staff.
To our shock and dismay, we were met not with dialogue, but with locked doors. The Mayor of San Francisco, an elected public servant whose salary is paid by the people, refused to grant entry to Black public employees and concerned residents seeking transparency and accountability.
Let us be clear: the Mayor’s Office is not a private estate—it is the people’s house. City Hall belongs to all San Franciscans. In all my years working under former Mayors London Breed and the late Ed Lee, I have never once witnessed the Mayor’s Office being locked to exclude members of the public—especially not in such a racially charged context.
This act is not just a breach of democratic values—it is a blatant expression of anti-Blackness. Mayor Lurie has consistently prioritized the interests of White and Asian communities while ignoring, excluding, and devaluing Black residents and city workers. San Francisco has become increasingly unsafe and unwelcoming for Black people—and Mayor Lurie’s actions reflect and reinforce that reality.
Mayor Lurie is not a monarch. He is not the CEO of a private corporation like Levi Strauss. He is a public servant. If he cannot distinguish between these roles—and if he continues to govern with disregard for Black San Franciscans—then he must be held accountable, including through immediate calls for recall.
